Jason — Lead Trainer
Jason founded Surf Training Lab after a lifetime devoted to surfing, movement, and coaching—blending formal expertise with the deeper, often overlooked side of surfing: presence, connection, and purpose. He began surfing at age 10 and holds formal degrees in exercise physiology and biomechanics, supported by decades of real-world experience across sport, rehabilitation, and performance training. He is also a certified yoga teacher, and his approach reflects that full spectrum: performance and peace, intensity and integration.
By age 11, Jason was already coaching—training horses and teaching riding lessons to both adults and children—developing an early ability to observe body position, movement patterns, and communicate clear corrections. Over the years, he competed and coached across multiple disciplines, including elite-level cycling, running, yoga, and other movement-based sports. That background shaped not only his physical training knowledge, but also his relationship with endurance, discomfort, focus, and breath—skills that translate directly into surfing longevity and performance under pressure.
Jason has worked extensively in physical rehabilitation with both athletes and non-athletes, and through his own athletic journey and years as a career firefighter, he developed a practical understanding of how bodies adapt, break down, and rebuild. As professional surfing evolved, he noticed elite surfers increasingly prioritizing mobility, recovery, breath control, and movement efficiency—training methods he had been applying long before they became mainstream.
Drawing from biomechanics, physiology, and practical experimentation, Jason developed a comprehensive surf-specific training system that he still uses personally—allowing him to surf high-level waves alongside athletes half his age, while helping others do the same. His strength lies not only in understanding anatomy and mechanics, but in a rare combination: a coach’s eye for precision and a soulful approach that helps surfers calm the mind, breathe, focus, and connect with the ocean in a deeper way.
For Jason, surfing was never primarily about money or hype. He grew up old school—where surfing meant friendship, respect, and a deep love for the ocean. That foundation remains central to how he teaches. He helps surfers build the capacity to perform, but also to experience—using breathwork, visualization, meditation, and mindful training tools to access a calmer nervous system, clearer decision-making, and a more meaningful relationship with the water. For some, that shift creates the kind of deep immersion where sessions feel almost dreamlike—where what happened in the ocean blends with visualization, recovery, and presence, and athletes leave not just “better,” but changed.
Jason has a particular talent for working with experienced and elite surfers—quickly identifying the weak link that limits performance, then building a plan that strengthens it without disrupting what already makes them great. At the same time, he can guide developing surfers through fundamentals with the same clarity and commitment, as showmanship or shortcuts aren’t the point—craft is.
His only requirement is simple: a genuine commitment to surfing as a discipline, not a one-time experience. When that commitment is present, Jason gives everything—and sessions often go far beyond the clock when the energy and focus are right. Over time, many participants become friends, return year after year, and carry the training systems—and the deeper mindset—back into their surfing and daily life.
