Our Health Oasis "Surf Training Lab" started when a retired professional athlete/physiologist/bio-mechanist/yoga instructor developed an individual intensive surf fitness regime, then shared it with locals for half a year (3 hours/day 5 days/week). The Locals (all senior members of San Juan del Sur's surf community, Surf Coaches & Surf Judges for the national circuit) who give so much to our Nicaraguan juniors and surf community got in the best shape of their lives. Receiving the gift, their own bodies and surf stoke returned, they continue to pay it forward to our community and with you.
We all love to watch surf movies, have a salsa class, spend time at the beach, see live music and eat out. But when we add in some pickleball, a swim, sauna or ice plunge, practicing yoga , play, surf, skate, recover, and even playing music, we just feel better. And we want to share that with you.
Our Clients become lifelong Friends in & out of the water.

Jason's Credentials/Expertise:
As a 55-year-old surfer who started surfing at age 10, my resume includes degrees in exercise physiology/biomechanics and a lifetime of coaching. At age 11 I was training horses and giving riding lessons to adults and children (developing my skill to see body positions and verbalize corrections). Later, I was a sponsored elite cyclist, runner, yoga instructor, and enveloped many other sports in which I competed and coached. I worked in physical rehab with athletes and lay persons; and as an athlete and later career firefighter I had my share of personal injuries which I rehabilitated myself. As I watched professional surfing evolve, I noticed more and more top surfers were prioritizing their surfing fitness by integrating the training modalities which I had been using for years. I combined many resources to create a surfing training routine to surf at my optimal level with guys half my age. My formal studies and personal experience of feeling sports movements in my own body, is supported by a natural aptitude for understanding the bodies anatomy, physiology & biomechanics, and being able to communicate that position and feel to others. Returning to my roots of coaching, I enjoy training others and sharing these techniques. I enjoy watching those I coach get Stoked. I enjoy building friendships and a community of students and participants who become friends and return often.

Roots
I didn’t grow up surfing to make a living at it. Surfing wasn’t a business, a competition, or a way to get sponsors. For me, it was health, friendship, and freedom. It was being in nature, sharing waves with friends, playing at the beach, and just being in the moment.
In the 70’s and 80’s surfers weren’t stars or jocks. We were outsiders, kids with skateboards and boards strapped to old cars. We didn’t film ourselves or chase likes — we just surfed. Maybe our athleticism carried us more than polished technique, but it didn’t matter. It was about style and fun. That was our surf culture — the art, music, parties, skipping school, warm summer nights, sun kissed skin and sun-bleached hair. Trips to baja, fish tacos, and camping on the sand. Those are my surfing roots.
Why Flexible Surf/Wellness Stays
Today, the surf world is filled with packaged camps, rigid itineraries, and people who come for the experience but miss the essence. Most camps bus you out, surf you for a couple hours, feed you at a buffet, and then repeat — all for a small fortune. It can feel less like a journey and more like a transaction.
Surf Training Lab was built to be the opposite. This is not a typical surf camp; it started as lifelong surf and travel friends who also aged and stayed fit. It’s more your perfect base camp you can return to annually. We built it for ourselves and then to share with you.
Here, you can stay in comfortable apartments with friends and choose add-ons like yoga, road trips, or surf video analysis, and move at your own rhythm. If the waves are firing, surf right here. If you want to explore, we pack up and road trip, sleeping over on the road, scoring different breaks, and sharing meals together.
It’s flexible, personal, and real — like surfing should be.

Our Philosophy
Surfing comes in seasons. Some years my best friend Jason and I live out of cars, surf dawn to dusk, and push ourselves into peak condition. Other years, like when he brought his kids, it’s about family, barbecues, parties, and mellow daily sessions. Both seasons are equally valid. Both are part of the journey.
That rhythm is what Surf Training Lab honors. Here, you can come for the intensity or the ease, the training or the culture. You can go as deep or as light as you want.
Because at its core, surfing is not just about waves. It’s about living. It’s about freedom, culture, music, friendship, and joy. That’s what we’re protecting and sharing here.
